Ever feel lost???

Ever wake up and feel completely lost? Like you thought you always knew what you were meant to do and be, but that one morning you wake up and it all feels like it is all gone? It is a feeling hard to explain or even understand… It is a feeling of emptiness that is hard to share… I am sure I will wake up tomorrow morning and feel normal again, but for today the feeling of being lost is hard. Feeling like you cannot accomplish what means the world to you the most. And feeling like you have no control…

Goal #92 – Make a New Friend

People that know me well, know that I am a pretty shy person. I find it very hard to meet new people and make new friends, which is why I spend a lot of time on line (the Nest). I have been on the nest for about 2 years now and have met a few of the lovely ladies from the board. But this one special lady LC (not sure she would like me to share her full name online) has been an amazing friend. I think I can now call her a friend, because when you meet someone that you have so much in common with and have gone through a lot of the same heartaches and pains, it is an instant bond. We have met a few times in person, but talk through e-mail at least a few times a week. Once we get back from vacation I would like to make a big effort for our DH’s (Dear Husband) to meet, cause I think there is a big friendship that is waiting to be continued and to know that we can support each other in everything that we go through without judging or jealousy is amazing. So with my new found friendship with LC, I will be marking #92 off my list.

Goal# 11 – Read One Book a Month (04/12)

Change of Heart by Jodi Picoult
Picoult bangs out another ripped-from-the-zeitgeist winner, this time examining a condemned inmate’s desire to be an organ donor. Freelance carpenter Shay Bourne was sentenced to death for killing a little girl, Elizabeth Nealon, and her cop stepfather. Eleven years after the murders, Elizabeth’s sister, Claire, needs a heart transplant, and Shay volunteers, which complicates the state’s execution plans. Meanwhile, death row has been the scene of some odd events since Shay’s arrival—an AIDS victim goes into remission, an inmate’s pet bird dies and is brought back to life, wine flows from the water faucets. The author brings other compelling elements to an already complex plot line: the priest who serves as Shay’s spiritual adviser was on the jury that sentenced him; Shay’s ACLU representative, Maggie Bloom, balances her professional moxie with her negative self-image and difficult relationship with her mother. Picoult moves the story along with lively debates about prisoner rights and religion, while plumbing the depths of mother-daughter relationships and examining the literal and metaphorical meanings of having heart.

She is coming to Austin!!!

Alison Krauss is coming to ACL and I must go (and of course because it is on my 101 list). I listen to her WAY too much and could probably sing a long with every song. So I might need to make 2008 the year to go to ACL and sweat my balls off. Sooo if anyone wants to buy me an early birthday present I will gladly accept it. Or I could threaten the world with singing along to Alison!!!

Another Day in the Frontal Lobe: A Brain Surgeon Exposes Life on the Inside
Katrina Firlik is a neurosurgeon, one of only two hundred or so women among the alpha males who dominate this high-pressure, high-prestige medical specialty. She is also a superbly gifted writer–witty, insightful, at once deeply humane and refreshingly wry. In Another Day in the Frontal Lobe, Dr. Firlik draws on this rare combination to create a neurosurgeon’s Kitchen Confidential–a unique insider’s memoir of a fascinating profession.
Neurosurgeons are renowned for their big egos and aggressive self-confidence, and Dr. Firlik confirms that timidity is indeed rare in the field. “They’re the kids who never lost at musical chairs,” she writes. A brain surgeon is not only a highly trained scientist and clinician but also a mechanic who of necessity develops an intimate, hands-on familiarity with the gray matter inside our skulls. It’s the balance between cutting-edge medical technology and manual dexterity, between instinct and expertise, that Firlik finds so appealing–and so difficult to master.
Firlik recounts how her background as a surgeon’s daughter with a strong stomach and a keen interest in the brain led her to this rarefied specialty, and she describes her challenging, atypical trek from medical student to fully qualified surgeon. Among Firlik’s more memorable cases: a young roofer who walked into the hospital with a three-inch-long barbed nail driven into his forehead, the result of an accident with his partner’s nail gun, and a sweet little seven-year-old boy whose untreated earache had become a raging, potentially fatal infection of the brain lining.
From OR theatrics to thornyethical questions, from the surprisingly primitive tools in a neurosurgeon’s kit to glimpses of future techniques like the “brain lift,” Firlik cracks open medicine’s most prestigious and secretive specialty. Candid, smart, clear-eyed, and unfailingly engaging, Another Day in the Frontal Lobe is a mesmerizing behind-the-scenes glimpse into a world of incredible competition and incalculable rewards.
